How the Main Line village of Paoli got its name is a story that’s well worth remembering. Once just a scattered collection of farms and woods in pre-Revolutionary America, it was an inn (and the revolutionary Corsican general after which it was named) that inspired Paoli to take its first steps towards fashioning its own identity.
When General Pasquale Paoli led Corsica to independence and became its first president in the 1750s, he became an inspiration to many American Patriots, one particular group of whom were drinking toasts to his name in a newly opened inn in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was St. Patrick’s Day, 1769 and the innkeeper, Joshua Evans, was inspired to name his new establishment “The General Paoli” after the famous, liberty-loving leader. For more than a century after that, the inn – now often just called “The Paoli” – was a landmark in the area until it burned down in 1899.
A popular stagecoach stop, the Paoli Inn served as the region’s first post office, the site of many a revolutionary meeting, and more. It was the nexus of a community that would become one of the Greater Philadelphia area’s most desirable places to live.
Today, Paoli is home to a population numbering more than 6,000. It extends over an area that’s within the territory of the three townships of Tredyffrin, Easttown and Willistown, all of which are in Chester County. Through the years, the community has made quite a few changes and improvements, but there are some things that it has held on to, foremost among which is its warm and comforting village-like feel. If you want to live in a place that still knows the true meaning of community, then you will probably want to consider investing in Paoli real estate.
The Paoli area is also sometimes referred to as Daylesford these days as it has been home to Daylesford Abbey, which occupies a 130-acre farm, since the 1960s. The abbey is under the purview of the Norbertines, who also established St. Norbert Parish here in 1956.
Apart from the abbey, Paoli is also well-known for being the site of quite a few notable attractions. These include Waynesborough, the sprawling Georgian home of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, and the Wharton Esherick Museum, which was the studio and home of “the Dean of American Craftsmen”, Wharton Esherick. The museum is a National Historic Landmark for Architecture.
For Main Liners, these aren’t the only things that Paoli has to offer. The community serves as the region’s center for health, as well, being home to Paoli Hospital, a facility that’s ranked in the top one percent of hospitals in the country.
