Named after the university that is its heart, the community of Villanova has the myriad charms and advantages of an old, established college town. These include a serene sense of timelessness, the aesthetic appeal of a vast collection of classic 19th century buildings, easily accessible year-round cultural events, and the joys of having one’s own homegrown sports teams to cheer on.
Located in both Lower Merion Township and Radnor Township, Villanova homes are nestled in a landscape defined by gently sloping hills, lush groves and flower-strewn meadows. Some of the most sought-after Main Line luxury homes are tucked away in these green, wooded folds, each one enjoying a level of privacy and seclusion that serves as an oasis of calm in today’s increasingly fast-paced world.
Villanova homes for sale are built along classic lines that reflect the community’s strong, enduring traditions. Here charming Cape Cods peep from behind a screen of mature trees, sprawling Colonial Revivals lie on acres of green, and Provencal-style manors crown the tops of low hills.
Like most Main Line communities, the Villanova area has a history that dates back to the Colonial era and centuries beyond. Running through the community is the Old Gulph Road, which was already an ancient Indian trail when the road was laid over it in the 17th century. Along the road are historic milestones that bear the coat-of-arms of Admiral Sir William Penn, which were raised in the 1790’s.
Once an agricultural community, Villanova’s character was indelibly changed when Villanova University was founded here by the Friars of the Order of St. Augustine in 1842. The university’s presence helped foster growth in the community in the 19th century, as did the advent of the railroad, which brought in the elite of the Gilded Age who built their grand country estates on Villanova’s lush acres. One of these, the former Appleford estate, has survived almost intact to this day as the 22-acre Appleford/Parsons Bank Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary.
Today, Villanova is a tranquil yet vibrant enclave well-known for being home to Pennsylvania’s largest and oldest Catholic university, whose 254-acre campus features many fine examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Villanova University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees and its schools’ and colleges’ academic programs have been ranked among the best in the country.
Those interested in Villanova homes for sale need not worry about their children’s lower education options as well. Villanova is served by the topnotch Lower Merion School District, considered to be one of the best in the country, as well as a selection of private schools, including the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, The Haverford School, Baldwin and The Agnes Irwin School.
